JapaneseShinobi: Heart Under Blade is a 2005 Japanese ninjutsu romance film directed by Ten Shimoyama and written by Kenya Hirata. The story is an adaptation of the novel, The Kouga Ninja Scrolls by Futaro Yamada, which depicts the clash between two ninja clans, Iga and Kouga, and the fated love between Koga Gennosuke (Koga) and Oboro (Iga). The theme song of this movie was the #1 hit, HEAVEN, by Ayumi Hamasaki. Contrary to what was said here earlier, there is no source that this movie won Grand Prize in Japan’s 2005 Bunshun Kiichigo Awards (the Japanese version of the Razzie Awards, which are given to the worst movies of the year). This movie, however, did win best actor and best new actress at both the Kinema Junpo Awards and Yokohama Festival in 2006 according to the Internet Movie Database. On February 6, 2007, FUNimation Entertainment released the film in the United States. The contents of the DVD is a 2-Disc Set with the main movie available in Japanese and a new dub from FUNimation themselves. The 2nd Disc contains Special Features and making-ofs. All of the films are subtitled in English. Also a manga and an anime called Basilisk: The Kouga Ninja Scrolls are based on the same novel, and bear the same character names as in the novel and the movie. Although their characters in the film are highly altered from both the original novel and the manga/anime series.

Plot

Set immediately after the Japanese Warring States Period (Sengoku Jidai), Iga and Koga, two ninja clans that produced powerful ninjas for warlords, have been waging a vendetta against each other over hundreds of years.Around 1614, Tokugawa Ieyasu, the highest ruler of Japan and the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate , perceived the threat posed by the ninjas of Iga and Koga. Attempting to consolidate his reign, he deliberately stirred up the feud between the two clans by inviting them to choose their five best ninja warriors to have a fight to the death.( see the list of their 6 top ninjas of Iga and Koga – see below “Who are list of Ninjas of Iga and Koga” ) Designated as the leaders of the two clans respectively, Koga Gennosuke (Joe Odagiri) and Oboro (Yukie Nakama), who were secretly married, are unwillingly embroiled in the political plot. Hence, they have to make a difficult decision between their love and clans.Initially, being peaceful and knowing the preciousness of life, they tried their utmost to prevent this meaningless and brutal fight by questioning the shogunate’s motives. After the deaths of all their comrades during several fights, however, they gradually accepted their inevitable fate.Scene of the last fight between Oboro (left) and Gennosuke (right)In the last fight, Koga Gennosuke chose not to defend himself and allowed his lover Oboro to kill him, thus letting the clan of Iga “win”. Meanwhile, Tokugawa Ieyasu sent his armies to exterminate ninja villages. To accomplish Gennosuke’s hope of saving the villages, Oboro implores Tokugawa Ieyasu not to destroy the villages and, as a show of her sincerity, blinds herself, thereby destroying her most powerful weapons, her eyes (which possessed the power to destroy an enemy from within the minute they make eye contact with her, a technique called 破幻之瞳, literally ‘the iris of annihilation’). Moved profoundly by Oboro, Ieyasu withdrew his armies and issued an injunction to protect the ninja villages. According to the movie, the ninjas of the villages lived on peacefully. Their descendants continue to live today.

About

Odagiri Joe was born in Tsuyama, Okayama prefecture, a small town in central Japan renowned for its beautiful cherry blossoms in the spring. Though he was accepted by Kochi University, he turned it down for an opportunity to study in the United States. He had originally intended to study movie directing at California State University in Fresno, but mistakes in the application process landed him in acting classes. It may have been a blessing in disguise, for two years after studying in Fresno and later starring in a few stage performances in Japan, Odagiri would find himself catapulted to fame in his role in the Kamen-Rider series, playing the central character, Godai Yuusuke. He became the predecessor of the “Ikemen Hero” craze (literally, “good-looking actors playing hero roles in popular TV series”).Since then, Odagiri has appeared in many movies and dramas. He won the Best New Actor Award at the 2003 Japan Academy Awards for his role as the uniquely bisexual nemesis in the film “Azumi”, and in the following year, was awarded the Best Supporting Actor Award for his electrifying performance in internationally acclaimed director Kitano Takeshi’s 2004 film, “Blood and Bones” (血骨). Odagiri’s creative acting skills and strong presence in films have secured him a place in stardom. He is slated to appear in numerous more films in 2005, including “メゾン・ド・ヒミコ (Maison de Himiko), where he portrays a homosexual man in a relationship with the protagonist (played by Shibasaki Kou)’s father.

Trivia

  • Originally debuting with his birth name, 小田切譲, he changed his name from the Kanji form to the Katakana form (form used primarily in the translation of Western names), オダギリジョー, since his first name is often misread as “Yuzuru”, instead of “Jo.” (“Jo” is not the most common way to read his first name.) Another reason for his name change is that he used the western name “Joe” when he attended California State University (CSU) as an arts major.

Tak Sakaguchi

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jump to: navigation, searchTak Sakaguchi (坂口拓 Sakaguchi Taku, b. March 15, 1975) is a Japanese actor. Best known for his lead role in the cult Japanese film Versus, Sakaguchi is a martial artist, and as a result typically stars in films featuring copious fight scenes, where he performs his own stunts. Sakaguchi is a Christian.[1][2]Before breaking into film, Tak Sakaguchi was a street fighter who was well-known for his martial art skills. He was discovered by the then-unknown director Ryuhei Kitamura to star in “Versus,” the movie that would change both of their lives. Since appearing in that film, he has appeared in several roles in films directed by Ryuhei Kitamura; in particular the Azumi series, his short in the Jam Films titled The Messenger (Requiem for the Dead) and minor roles in Aragami and Alive. He played a larger role in the quirky yet successful Battlefield Baseball, but has yet to acquire the same success he did with Versus.2006 will see Sakaguchi in more mainstream films like Shinobi: Heart Under Blade, as a supporting character and as the main character of Death Trance. In the latter he plays a character similar to his role in Versus.Sakaguchi guest-starred in the Japanese tokusatsu show, Kamen Rider Kabuto, as a main villain (Reiji Nogi/Cassisworm).
